Abstract

[Also in Division H3] A wave-motion is produced by situating a generator of a varying magnetic field within a structure composed of alternate shells of magnetic and non-magnetic materials or of magnetic materials of different permeabilities. The waves produced are described as "magnetic waves" and it is suggested that they are cone stituted by waves of the electromagnetic typwithout the electric vector. The means for producing the varying magnetic field may comprise a rotating bar magnet or a conducting rod (e.g. of graphite) having wound thereon a coil made of a magnetic material. It is stated if a current is made to flow in the conductor, the magnetic field produced leads to the production of oscillations. The conducting rod may be replaced by a linear series of passive or active electrolytic cells. It is stated that electromagnetic waves are produced if a metal such as silver is illuminated by the "magnetic waves" of the invention.
