A milking apparatus includes a collector comprising a variable vacuum chamber 1 connected both to a pulsator 14 and the variable vacuum chambers 13 of the teat cups 12, a collecting chamber 2 connected to the teat chambers 10 of the cups, and a constant vacuum chamber 3 connected to the collecting chamber 2 when milk is being drawn from the teat cups and having a diaphragm 4 with a pipe 6 centrally attached which simultaneously disconnects the collecting chamber from the constant vacuum chamber and connects the former to the atmosphere so that the collector may be emptied. With the pulsator in the vacuum mode there is a reduced pressure in the variable pressure chamber 1 and the diaphragm 4 is in a raised position so that tube 6 engages a stopper 7. When in the non-vacuum mode, the diaphragm 4 is forced down to its lowest position where it engages the rim of opening 5 thereby disconnecting the chambers 2 and 3 and simultaneously the separation of the tube 6 from the stopper 7 allows the entry of air into the collecting chamber. The apparatus can be used for three cycle mode of operation when the bore of pipe 6 is enlarged and the compression stroke is followed by a rest stroke during which air in the teat chambers 10 is at atmospheric pressure.
