Abstract

898,262. Diaphragm pumps. FULLWOOD & BLAND Ltd., R. J. April 29, 1960 [Feb. 3, 1959], No. 3806/59. Class 102(1). A pump for use as a releaser device in a vacuum milking apparatus comprises a pump diaphragm 1 and driving diaphragms 2, 3 all mounted on a rod 4. The pump diaphragm 1 and the member 14 form a chamber having a port leading to nipple 17; the diaphragm 2 and member 14 form a chamber having a port leading to nipple 22, and the diaphragm 3 and member 25 form a chamber having a port leading to nipple 29. The chamber between the diaphragms 2, 3 is in communication with the atmosphere. The member 13, forming part of the pump chamber has outlets 30, 40 leading to valve chambers 31, 41 fitted with gravity operated poppet valves 33, 43. In operation, the opening 42 of the valve 41 is connected to a receiving vessel under reduced pressure, directly linked to the milk pipe line of the vacuum milking apparatus, and the opening 32 of valve 31 is connected to a milk container at atmospheric pressure. The nipples 17, 29 are connected to the pulsator and nipple 22 to the vacuum pump. The driving diaphragm 2 is caused to flex towards the right and so the volume of the pump chamber decreases. When the pulsator communicates with the vacuum pump, the larger area of the diaphragm 3 causes the pump diaphragm to move to the left and so the pump chamber alternately expands and contracts as the pulsator alternately connects with the atmosphere and vacuum pump. As the volume increases, valve 33 closes and 43 opens and allows milk to pass into the chamber. When the volume decreases, valve 43 closes and 33 opens and milk flows into the receiving container. In modifications of the invention, there may be three or more driving diaphragms, each of the same area. Specifications 602,938 and 795,702 are referred to.
