A roll forming machine adapted to operate at different predetermined widths for forming sheet metal channel sections comprises sets of upper and lower powered roll spindles 14 carrying co-operating forming rolls 12, 13 each consisting of a fixed roll element 26 and an axially slidable roll element 28 the movement of which is limited by an abutment 35 on the machine frame 22 and a spring spacer clip or clips 34 each having a U-shaped cross-section (Fig. 4) are force fitted on either side of the slidable roll elements to firmly hold them in position. Progressive forming of a sheet is accomplished by passing it between the rolls of spaced-apart roll sets to form a profile as shown in Fig. 3.
