Abstract

1,211,710. Surface finishing. SHIKISHIMA TIPTON K.K. 27 Nov., 1967 [26 Nov., 1966], No. 53912/67. Heading B3D. A mixture of workpieces to be surface finished and abrasive is loaded into at least one barrel, having an internal cross-section in the shape of an equilateral polygon with from five to eight sides, a substantial free space being left in the barrel; the barrel is rotated at n rotations per unit time in one direction about its own axis and simultaneously gyrated at N revolutions per unit time in the opposite direction about a fixed axis, parallel to and located at a distance R from the axis of the barrel, R being greater than the radius r of the circumcircle of the equilateral polygon; the following relations are satisfied:- The proportion of workpieces to abrasive is preferably not less thanl: 10 by volume. The mixture may occupy 40-70%, and preferably 50-60%, of the internal volume of the barrel. N preferably lies in the range 80/#2R - 350/#2R r.p.m. R being in metres. A shaft 12 journalled in bearings 14, 14 on the legs of a U-shaped framework 10 is driven, through endless belt 38, by an electric motor 32 on the framework 10. Spaced support discs 16, 16 secured to the shaft 12 have located therebetween sleeves 18 disposed at substantially equal angular intervals. Cylindrical housings 20 are carried by shafts 22 supported in the sleeves, each housing having mounted therein a barrel 24. Each shaft 22 has secured thereto a sprocket 26 connected by a chain 30 to one of a number of sprockets 28 integral with each other and rotatable on the shaft 12. An electric motor 40 on the framework 10 drives the sprockets 28 through belt 46, change speed gearing 44 and belt 52. The motor 32 is rotated in the direction of arrow 54 to drive the support discs 16 in the direction of arrow 55 while the motor 40 may be rotated in the direction of arrow 56 or 57 to drive the barrels 24 in the direction of arrow 58 or 59.
