Abstract

<PICT:1120535/C6-C7/1> Apparatus, Figs. 1, 3 and 5, in which tanning operations including fulling, soaking, colouring and impregnation with oil or grease can be effected, comprises a rotatably mounted, horizontal drum 1, whose length exceeds its diameter, having a cylindrical, e.g. wooden, peripheral wall, from the interior surface of which elements, e.g. pegs or slats 20, spaced apart along at least two helical lines, such as lines A and B, project radially into the drum, so as to move goods being treated continuously to and fro between the ends of the drum whilst it is being rotated, as by an electric motor 2, a chain 8 and a sprocket 7 on a stubaxle 4, secured centrally in the end 3 and mounted in bearings in a housing 6 on a support 5, which bearings preferably allow slight pivoting or play of the axle 4. The drum is preferably supported, near its other end, on two rollers 9, which are resiliently sprung and pivotally mounted on two posts 13, so as to absorb any operational shocks. The drum's length is preferably at least twice its diameter. The drum has at least one closable opening, e.g. a circular end-opening, whose diameter is greater than half that of the drum, which opening can be closed by a cover 17, e.g. utilizing quick-closing devices 18. An observation window 19 may be provided in the cover. The helical lines A and B may be of equal and opposite pitch, and each line may encircle the drum at least twice. There may be between 8 and 16 elements 20 along each complete turn of each helical line.
