Abstract

1,152,250. Rotary elevators. METAL BOX CO. Ltd. 14 Nov., 1967 [20 Dec., 1966], No. 56989/66. Heading B8A. [Also in Division F4] An apparatus for drying cans 2 (e.g. food cans) comprises two rotatable plates 5, 6 between which extend rotatable rollers 7 for supporting the cans and rotating them about their longitudinal axes, the plates 5, 6 and rollers 7 defining a plenum chamber which is connected to a fan 4 for applying suction to the chamber, the cans 2 being held against the rollers and having the water removed from their external surfaces by the suction being applied by fan 4. The rollers 7 may be driven via planet gears 11 and a sun gear 12 mounted on a rotatable shaft coaxial with the axis of rotation of the plates and driven via belt 20 by motor 16. Motor 16 also drives the plates 5, 6 via belt 19. Between the rollers 7 rods. 21 extend between the plates 5, 6 and are mounted in slots 22 in the .plates such that they can be moved into or out of engagement with the rollers 7. The rods are spring biased to a position out of engagement with the rollers 7. A shutter 25 is arranged around a segment of the plenum chamber and is adjacent the rollers 7. The screw-type conveyer 26 for feeding the cans towards the plenum chamber may have any material which has leaked from the cans removed therefrom by suction. In use, food cans 2 from, a cooker are removed from conveyer 26 by suction applied to the plenum chamber and held against the rollers 7. As the cans are carried around the plenum chamber they are dried by suction. When the position of the shutter 25 is reached the cans are released from the rollers 7 due to the suction being cut off from the cans 2 by the shutter 25. If there is no can resting between two adjacent rollers 7 the appropriate rod 21 is held against the rollers 7 by suction to close the gap between the rollers 7.
