Abstract

A wall 1, Fig. 1, which may form a structural load-bearing building frame comprises a plurality of units 2 each in the form of a frame composed of upright members 3 connected by horizontal members 4 which define spaces for the reception of transparent or opaque cladding panels, each unit being connected to the adjacent unit or units by expansion joints comprising horizontal splices 6, Fig. 9 (which resemble horizontal frame members 4) extending between neighbouring upright members of laterally adjacent units and which are slidably mounted on spigots 5 provided on said neighbouring upright members. The upright members 3 may have spigots and corresponding sockets at opposite ends so that units may be superposed in spigot and socket engagement. Channel section members 30 connected to the uprights 4 may receive and support corrugated floor or roof decking 29, 30. The upper edge of the wall may be finished by a coping 34 and corrugated sheet steel frieze 36. The lowermost horizontal members are welded to plates 24 which are bolted to the concrete floor slab 23. The panels may comprise double glazing and spaced inner and outer panels respectively of asbestos and vitrous enamelled steel which may be interiorly faced with asbestos cement, thermal insulation being provided in the space between the inner and outer panels.
