Abstract
1,210,694. Phosphoric acid purification; hydrogen fluoride. FMC CORP. 21 Feb., 1968, No. 8363/68. Heading C1A. Phosphoric acid, obtained by acidulation of a phosphate rock with sulphuric acid, and having a concentration of 10-30%, by wt. P 2 O 5 , is purified by:-(a) adjusting the calcium ion concentration to 0À25-3À0% by wt. CaO, by addition of a calcium compound whose anion does not remain in, or contaminate, the solution; (b) adding enough hydrogen fluoride to convert all the cationic impurities Ca, Al, Mg and Fe to their fluorides, to precipitate calcium fluoride and to co-precipitate the cationic impurities as their fluorides; (c) separating the precipitate; and (d) recovering phosphoric acid, the pH being maintained below 2 during reaction. Calcium ions may be added as calcium carbonate. Hydrogen fluoride may be added as a 5-15% aqueous 'solution, and, generally, amounts of HF of up to about 5% are required Addition of HF, and the subsequent precipitation can be carried out at from 0‹ to 100‹ C. The pH is preferably 1À5. Hydrogen fluoride may be regenerated by reacting the precipitate obtained with silicon dioxide and steam in a reaction zone at temperatures of 1000‹-1400‹ C. The recovered HF may be recycled.
