[Also in Division A5] Novel, fungicidal and surface active amine oxides of the general formula (A.SO 2 ) m X, wherein m is 1, 2, 3 or 4, A signifies C 12 to C 18 alkyl, aryl, alkyl(C 1 to C 12 )-aryl or alkoxy (C 1 to C 12 )-aryl and may be substituted, and X signifies an aliphatic radical which is devoid of sulphur and contains m available nitrogen valencies, at least m primary or secondary nitrogen atoms and at least one amine oxide group (the nitrogen atoms may be substituted by ethylene oxide or propylene oxide chains which are terminated by hydroxy groups), are obtained by reacting a sulphochloride, A.50 2 .Cl (obtained, e.g. by chlorosulphonation), with an appropriate diamine or polyamine and treating the resultant sulphonamide with hydrogen peroxide; if necessary, the sulphonamide, prior to treatment with hydrogen peroxide, may be reacted in situ with ethylene oxide or propylene oxide so that any hydrogen atoms attached to basic nitrogen atoms are converted to the chains referred to above.
