Grates.-The upper run of a chain grate moves on undulating tracks and is driven by means which transmit to it, at various points in its length, the pull in the lower run of the chain. Figs. 3 and 4 show part of a grate consisting of transverse bars 10, the ends of which are supported in the links 12 of two side chains, the upper and lower lengths of which run respectively on tracks 27, 30. The tracks are made in sections each of which preferably has a sprocket-wheel 31 to transmit the pull of the lower run to the upper run of the chain. On the upper side of each section is a pair of undulating tracks 27 on which run the wheels 15 on the pintles connecting the links 12. On the underside of each section is a single track 30 which supports the lower run of the chain. Each section is supported on a shelf 24 on the sides of the furnace framework, and is attached to the frame by a bolt 33. The undulations of the tracks tilt the grate bars 10 and break up the crust which forms on the fire. Some of the sections may have their upper tracks 27 flat.
