Abstract
109,883. Hofmann, A. Nov. 17, 1916 Grates.-An inclined or step grate consists wholly or partly of steps built up of reciprocating bars. Fig. 1 shows a step grate each set of which consists of reciprocating bars h on axles k and cross-bars i in side bearers c. The bars are reciprocated, alternate bars in opposite directions, by eccentrics m on the axles, which are rotated by wheel and chain gearing u, t connecting the axles d, d'. To enable each bar to be removed, each axle k consists of a flat bar and carries slotted eccentrics m, and the bars h have slotted ends n. The bars are cooled by adjacent water tubes, and may have removable ends h<2>. The lowest step p is of longer bars which have small steps at their inner ends, in addition to steps on their outer ends. In a modification, only the two outermost fire-bars at each side of each step are moved by eccentrics; the ends h<2> of these bars are supported by rocking bars i, which move the inner fire-bars of each step; two bars i are fitted to each step, each bar i supporting alternate fire-bars and moving them in opposite directions. In another modification, a step of long bars, preferably formed with steps like the bar p, Fig. 1, is placed in the middle of the grate. Fig. 8 shows a grate consisting of a portion v with fixed bars, a step of reciprocating bars h<4> as described above, and two portions v<1>, v<2>, consisting of bars with two horizontal parts h<6>, h<8> and inclined parts h<7>; they are moved as described above.
