FUBNACE-GRATE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALPrIoNsE BAILLOT, a subject of the King of Belgium, and Annie lvliiimoun, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at the city and district of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful lmproven'ients in l urnace-Grates; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention to be hereinafter described relates to furnace grates, and more particularly to furnace grates of the individually operable section type.
Broadly speaking, it comprises a framework, a series of separate parallel longitudinal bars mounted on the framework, a grate bar supported between each pair of longitudinal bars and provided with a plurality of hollow supporting blocks or sleeves, grate teeth slidably mounted in said blocks, and means for causing vertical movement of the grate teeth.
In order to more clearly disclose the construction, operation and use of the invention, reference should be had to the accompanyin drawings forming part of the present app ication.
Throughout the several figures of the drawings, like reference characters designate the same parts.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical cross section on line 11 of Fig. 3; Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section on line 2-2 of Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a plan View of the grate, one half being shown in horizontal cross section on line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. t is a side elevation of one grate tooth; Fig. 5 is a vertical cross section on line 55 of Fig. 6; and, Fig. 6 is a top plan view of Fig. i.
The main object of the invention is to provide a grate comprising a plurality of very small sections each movable independently of all other sections, and so arranged that the raising of each section will permit the discharge of ashes between such section and the adjacent sections.
In the preferred form of the invention, a grate 1 is provided. On its frame is mounted a series of parallel longitudinal. supporting bars 2, arranged in pairs. Between the bars of each pair is riveted a grate bar 3, provided with a plurality of hollow sup- Specification of Letters Patent.

porting blocks or sleeves l. The pairs of supporting bars are separated from each other by spacing blocks 5 connected to one or other of the supporting bars. In each of the hollow supporting blocks t is slidably disposed a grate tooth, comprising a broad toothed head 6 and a long projecting shank 7. The shank 7 of each tooth, when the tooth is in lowered position, projects a considerable distance below the bar 3, and its lower end is rounded. This lower rounded end is adapted to be engaged by the curved surface of a lifting roller 8. The lifting roller 8 is adapted to travel on ways or beams 9 mounted beneath the grate at such distance as to support the roller, at all times, in operative position. The roller may be operated by means of the handle and yoke 10 and 11, or by any other suitable means. The roller may be of such length as to extend across the entire width of the grate, or it may be of such length as to extend only partially across the width of the grate. In the latter case, it may be reciprocated beneath one section of the grate, then removed, shifted, and reciprocated beneath the other sections, successively.
On referring to the drawings, it will be noted that the grate teeth are arranged in parallel diagonal rows across the top of the grate. Consequently, the shaking or agitating motion caused by movement of the roller 8 will be effected in similar directions. As the successive heads 6 are forced above their normal height, the loosened ashes will drop pastthem and between the bars to the ash pit below. The outer series of teeth extending around the head of the grate body, are of slightly different construction than the others. These outer teeth have shorter shanks, which do not extend far enough down to be engaged by the roller 8. Furthermore, the bodies or heads of these teeth are formed, on their outer sides, as blocks adapted to match one with the other and present a continuous unbroken line. Thus, although the outcrmost teeth are removable, they do not reciprocate.
It is thought that the operation and use of the invention will be clear from the preceding detailed description.
Changes may be made in the construction, arrangement and disposition of the several parts of the invention, without in any way departing from the field and scope of the same, and it is meant to include all such within this application, wherein only a preferred form has been disclosed.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination, in a furnace grate, grate bars, provided with hollow supporting blocks, grate teeth removably and slid ably mounted therein, and a longitudinally. movable roller for operating said teeth.
2. In combination, in a grate, grate bars provided with hollow supporting blocks, grate teeth movably mounted in said supporting blocks, and longitudinally movable means for causing independent vertical reciprocation of said teeth.
3. In combination, in a grate, grate teeth provided with long integral stems, grate bars provided with means for receiving said stems, said teeth stems being mounted for free movement in said means and longitudinally movable means for reciprocating independently any grate tooth at any point of said grate.

In combination, in a grate, grate teeth provided with long stems, grate bars having hollow supporting blocks riveted thereto, said teeth being slidably mounted in said blocks, a longitudinally movable lifting roller for reciprocating said teeth and means for supporting said roller in operative posi tion throughout the length of said grate.
5. In combination, in a stationary grate, supporting bars, grate bars provided with hollow supporting blocks, grate teeth slidably mounted in, and removable from, said blocks and a lifting roller engaging a part of each tooth for reciprocating the same.
6. A grate of the character described, comprising a plurality of supporting bars, grate bars mounted between said supporting bars and provided with hollow supporting blocks, grate teeth slidably mounted in said hollow blocks, ways mounted beneath said grate teeth, and a lifting roller adapted to travel upon said ways and engage said grate teeth to raise the same.
'7. In combination, in a stationary grate, supporting bars, grate bars provided with hollow supporting blocks, grate teeth slidably mounted in said blocks and means for reciprocating one tooth at a time as said means move forward under said grate bars.
8. In combination, in a grate, supporting bars, grate bars provided with hollow supporting blocks, grate teeth slidably mounted in said blocks in diagonal lines across said grate and a longitudinally movable roller engaging parts of said teeth to vertically reciprocate the same.
