FRANK MAHONY, DECEASED, LATE OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, BY NETTIE MAHONY, ADMINISTRATRIX.
GRATE-BAR.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that FRANK MAHONY, now deceased, and late a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, did invent new and useful Improvements in Grate-Bars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to grates and has for its object grate bars which are provided with removable grate sections which are carried by rocking` or stationary bars and held firmly in place thereon but may be separately removed or replaced by new faces or sections when burnt out. This and other objects and details of the invention are more fully described in the following specification, set forth in the claim and illustrated in the drawings, where the same reference characters are used to designate the same parts in the various views.
Figure 1 is an enlarged view of a grate section. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of same. Fig. 8 is a detail plan View of the grate showing the method of removing bars therefrom. v
In ordinary grate bars as heretofore used, the burning out or destruction of a small section of same renders the whole bar worthless and its removal and the replacing of a new bar entails some expense. This destruction of the bar takes place on the narrow bearing faces upon which the burning coal rests and between which the air passes to feed the flames.
The grates are carried by frames composed of side bars 15 and end cross bars 16 dovetailed to the side pieces, and the latter being provided with a comb edge to allow the play of the grate sections 17 but it is obvious that the cross bars may have a straight face and answer the purpose.
The side bars 15 have sockets 18 in which rest trunnions 19 of the rocking bars 2O which are skeleton frames Whose upper edge Specification of Letters Patent.

constitutes the bar. The grate sections 17 are loosely fitted on the bar 20 between the shoulders 23, the upper face Q-l of the sections being rounded and serrated while two depending members form a fork 25 to straddle the bar and rest against the frame to hold them in an upright position. The fork is of greater width than the face 24 and when the sections are placed in position, side by side on the rocking bar an air space 2G is left between them. Then it is desired to increase the width of this air space, forks or spacers 27 are hung on the bar 20 between the sections and the grate is thus adapted for larger size coal.
Grate bars constructed in accordance with this invention are readily repaired by simply removing the sections, which can be done by means of a fork 33 as shown in Fig. 3 and by the same means new sections may be inserted.
Other modifications of the various parts may be resorted to without departing from the essential features above described.
lWhat l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In combination, a frame, supporting bars therein, grate sections removably mounted upon said bars. and each comprising a flat body having' a raised slotted portion intermediate its width and a corrugated head connected centrally to the body to form shoulders upon its under side, said head being narrower than the raised portion, togethcr with a forked tool having inturned ends upon its legs to engage beneath the shoulders for removing the grate sections from the supporting bars.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NETTIE MAHGNY, Aclmz'm'strotrz'm for Frank Mahom deceased.
lVitnesses:
WARD PHILLIPS, JAMES F. DUHAMEL.
