To all whom #may concern:
g of grate bars and Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. HULSON, a citizen of the United States, residing' at YKeokuk, in the county of Lee and State of lowa', have invented certain new and useful improvements in Grates, which the following'is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in grates, and more particularly to the class known as rocking lire gratos used in steam plants and other plantsl where a large coal lire is maintained; andthe object is to provide means whereby the grate sections are removably held upon the grate bar.
A further object is to provide 'means whereby the grate bar and grate sections can all be removed. from the side bars or` grate frame without in any wise interfering with the other grate sections or grate'pbars orl grate frame.
Another object of the invention is in the manner of attaching grate sections to the bar whereby a new grate section can be placed upon the bar if one ofthe grate. sections A should become 'broken Without removing the bar. The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim. In the accompanying drawingse-Figure 1 is a viewin perspective showing a number ate sections assembled in the side bars or rame of the' grate. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal .sectionshowing the manner of attaching the gli-ate sections to the grate bar. Fig. 3 is a side view of the grate bar, and showing the shaker arm connected thereto. A, represents the side bar of a grate, and B the'ccntral bar. The central bar B is formed so that theentire set or series of grate sections and grate bars can be connected up instead of'forming grate bars in such lengths as to run the entire width of the oven, and thereby dividing the oven by `he central bar B2 which is provided with means" for supportlng the grate bars on bth sides thereof. ' The grate bar C is made of a Hat piece of 'metal of suiiicient -width and is provided with rounded ends' 2, 2, which form bearings for the grate bar. The rounded ends 2 are received in the vertical sockets l, 1 of the bars A and B. Along one side, of the the cutaway portionslopes from the top of the bar to the bottom, thereby permitting the grate sections to be placed obliquely upon the bar and then brought to an upright or vert-ical position and the key 3 to enterthe groove 8 of the grate sectionsas v the grate sections are slid along upon'the bar into position. v
The grate sections 6 are made in the usual formatiom'being large at the top and narrow andinclining from the ends toward the base; The grate sections are rovided with s1ots7 which are formed at t e base, ofthe grate sections. The walls Aof slots 7 are straight, and the top of the slotisY always straight. On one of the side walls ofthe slot, a curved groove 8 is formed.- `The grate sect-ion is adapted to be placed uponl the grate bar @,and 'the slot 7 conforms to the shape of the grate bar, making a snug lit. The'cu'rved thereby locking t e grate sections uponthe grate bar. The lgrate sections are placed upon the grate b-ar in' this manner and are all locked by t-he key 3. The last grate secis held thereon by the keyv 3, but,v as the end of the key is cut olf a short distance at this end, the grate section will not engage the key the entire width of t-he grate section, but will receive only a partial engagement, and this engagement is sufficient for retaining the grate section in place upon the bar.

When it is desired to remove a grate bar romfthe grate, the endlof the grate bar which is free israised, which permits the stud 10 of the shaker arm 9 to become disengaged from the reach bar 11, and after the shaker arm is released from engagement With .the reach bar' l1,`the grate bar and grate. sections can be easily removed by simply raising them from the grate frame without in any wise interfering with any of the other grate bars or grate sections, or the grate frame. j
From'the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a grate, any grate bar of timecwithout in any.. wise interfering with the other arms or'grate sections of other grate bars, or with the grate frame, and further that the grate sections may be placed upon or removed from the grate bar when such bar is in position without disturbing the position of such grate bar or any other grate' bar, or the grate frame, or rea-ch bar, and when placed on the bar such grate section will be fastened thereon. In Icase of any of the grate sections becoming broken upona grate bar, the other grate sections can be moved along the bar and an additional grate section or grate sections can'be placed upon the bar while in position Without otherwise interfering with the other grate sections or other grate bars. The engagement of the grate sections with the grate hars is such that the grate section is supported on the bar by' the ,bar being practically entirely received within the vertical slot of the grate section and one wall of the slot heing provided with the groove in which thc key 3. of the grate har is received whereby the bar and grate sect-ion are connected together, the grate section being received upon the bar in this manner, prevents any lateral or endwise Strain upon the grate section.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Ina grate, the combination with a grate frame, of grate bars mounted thereon, a key formed on the grate bars, one end of the grate bars having an oblique cutaway portion, and grate sections mounted on thc grate bars by lacing them upon the cutaway portion o the grate bars and then sliding them along the bars and on the keys for locking them in position.
