NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED MINIER, OFS T. JOSEPH, MICHIGAN.
FURNACE-GRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 330,608, dated November 17,1885.
Application filed September 14, 1885. Serial No. 177,076. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, FRED MINIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnace-Grates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in grates for furnaces, and is designed to produce a dump-grate that shall obviate the drawing of the fire and the wetting of the coals after being drawn. The steam consequent to wetting the hot coals is drawn by the draft under the red-hot grate and tends to warp, crack, or break the grate. These objectionable features are completely obviated by this invention, as well as a saving of time accomplished, and a corresponding saving of coal and steam.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of the grate, and Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
Within the fire-box A is supported a series of longitudinal grate-bars, B, terminating at a distance from the front of said box, and also on each side of the grate formed by the bars B, a bar, 0, extending the entire length of the box. The inner web of each of the bars 0 is provided with a recess or socket about midway between the front ends of the bars B and the front of the fire-box. Within these sock- The front ends of the bars B are beveled from the top toward the bottom, as shown at F, and the back of the section D is coincidently beveled, as at G, so that the two parts will fit snugly, and also the beveled ends of the bars 13 act as a support for the rear of the section D. The front of the section D is provided with a projection, H, in which is an eye. This projection, when the dumping-section is closed, rests under the upper edge of the opening I leading to the ashpan.
The clinkers and such maybe easily brought forward to the dumping-section, when, by inserting the clinker-hook in the eye, the mass may be deposited at the mouth of the ash-pan and the necessity of wetting obviated. The operation is easily and quickly performed and much time saved thereby. The furnace-doors being open a less time than by the usual process, less coal and steam are lost.
I claim- 1. A grate formed of longitudinal bars with extended side bars, and a dumping-section resting between said extended bars and pivotally supported thereby, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A grate formed of longitudinal bars with beveled front ends, and extended side bars with websin the extensions centrally recessed, and a dumping-section with one side beveled and the other provided with aneye, said section being formed of a series of connected webs and supported by pivots which rest in the said recesses. substantially as and for the purpose specified.
' In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRED MINIER.
