Description

(No Model.)
J. P. WAGNER.
GRATB.
Patented Jan. 5, 1892.'.
W/TNESSES; l www UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. VAGNER, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK.
GRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,640, dated January 5, 1892.
Application iiled July 24, 1891. Serial No. 400,600. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN F. WAGNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the countyol:` Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grates, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to an improvement by which the capacity of a grate can be condensed; and the invention consists in the details of construction set forth in the following speciiication and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a frontelevation of a stove and grate provided with my improvement and sectioned along Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a section along fg y, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a section along .e e', Fig. 1.
In the drawings, the letter A designates the shell or body of a stove or range, and B is the grate.` When a large fire is wanted, the entire grate is used for the support of fuel. If a smaller fire is desired, the grate is provided with one or more partitions C. Each partition is composed of a series of bars which are placed a suitable distance apart, so that the air has ready access through said bars to the fire. The partitions have lugs or supportsD adapted to rest on the top of the grate. To fix the partition in position, the grate may have shoulders E for the engagement of the lugs D; but these shoulders may be dispensed with, as the tapering reduced lower end portion F of the partition which projects between the grate-bars will prevent displacement of the partition. An eye or perforation Gin each partition enables the latter to be engaged by a lifter or poker, so that the partition can be readily moved, even when hot,
without danger of the attendant being burned. 4o
The iire can be made either in the center portion of the grate between two partitions or between a partition and one end of the grate, as desired. As the partition is coinposed of bars or made in resemblance of a ing its lower end tapering and projecting downward between the grate-bars of the grate, substantially as described.
2. A grat-e having the upper edges of its front and rear sides provided with pairs of shoulders E, in combination with the slotted 6o partition C, having its lower end tapered and projecting down between the grate-bars and its upper end provided with front and rear lugs D, arranged between the said shoulders on the front and rear sides of the grate, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
lJOHN E. WAGNER.
