Abstract
362,078. Step - by - step conveyers. SMALLWOOD, A. and FALLON, J., British Mills, Cornwall Road, Smethwick, Birming- ham. Oct. 8, 1930, No. 30074. [Class 78 (i).] In a reciprocating bar conveyer having alternated series of carrier bars which are each adapted for movement at a common load-carrying level and at a lower level, each series of bars is lifted into and lowered from the load-carrying level only when moving at the same synchronized forward speed as the other series whereby the load is transported uniformly without any relative movement between it and the carrier bars in the direction of load traverse. As shown applied to a continuous furnace for heating metal sheets, bars, &c., the hearth is constituted by two alternated series of longitudinally reciprocating bars 1, 2 extending through the furnace and the loading and unloading extensions. The bars are faced with interlocking refractory blocks 8 or may have heat resisting metallic facings and are supported on a number of balanced pairs of cross girders 22, 23, each supporting alternate lines of bars. The girders are slidably supported by short rail tracks 24 upon wheels 25 mounted on the opposite ends of rocker arms 26 arranged in pairs on opposite sides of the furnace and interconnected in series by levers 27, links 28, 29 and intermediate levers 31 operated to raise the bars alternately by a cam 34, Fig. 5, coacting with an oscillating frame 33 on the link 28. Reciprocating motion of the bars is derived from a cam roller 12 mounted on a shaft driven from a motor 9 through a speed-reducing gear 10, and having a groove 13 in which engage opposite rollers 14, 15 carried by crossheads 16, 17 connected by links 18, 19 to cross girders 20, 21 to which the forward ends of the two series of bars are respectively attached. The form of the cam groove is such that when both sets of bars are in load-carrying position they are moved forward with the same speed. The rocking cam 34 is driven from the shaft 37 by gearing 36. The conveyer may be reversed and may thus be applied to a single-ended furnace. The bars may be curved for application to circular furnaces.
