Abstract

1,209,951. Heating by electric discharges. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. 12 Jan., 1968 [13 Jan., 1967; 16 Aug., 1967], Nos. 2036/67 and 37705/67. Heading H5H. [Also in Division C7] A metal wire 17 is made the cathode in an electrolyte 12 and is heated, e.g. for annealing purposes by discharge between it and an anode 15, 111, the wire 17 being drawn through the electrolyte 12. The wire 17 may be moved past a nozzle anode 15 through which electrolyte is circulated to impinge on the wire. The wire is moved either vertically as shown, see also Figs. 3A, 3B (not shown), past assorted arrangements of one or more nozzles 15, 30, 35, or is moved horizontally past nozzles 15, Figs. 2A, 2B (not shown). The enclosed space above the electrolyte bath 110 contains a protective atmosphere such as nitrogen or hydrogen, the anode in this embodiment being a plate 111 of stainless steel.
