In a hand-operated device for impressing the data on a letterpress die 7 on to a recording strip 4 lined with an ink transfer medium 5 depression of the handle 18 releases a cocked spring 9 whereby a platen 6 is forcibly moved into contact with the superimposed ink medium, strip and die. A lever 14 is used to re-charge the platen 6 for a subsequent printing operation, the re-charging, movement of the lever automatically moving the strip 4 and the transfer medium 5 forward through an appropriate movement from the feed spool 2 to the take-up spool 3.
