1,181,864. Selective embossing. EUROHANDELSGESELLSCHAFT FUR MASCHINENUND INDUSTRIEBEDARF m.b.H. 13 July, 1967 [16 March, 1967; 17 March, 1967], No. 32239/67. Heading B6F. Type-bar machines; index setting; disposition of type.-A multi-sided type or embossing bar 9 is selectively slidable in a groove 7 to a central embossing position 27, each associated pair of sides comprising index setting characters 19a which are visible in the top 21 of the groove 7 and negative embossing characters 19b. The index characters and the embossing characters on the other pair or pairs of sides may be of different sizes, and the bar may be interchanged with others bearing other kinds of characters. Case-shift.-The change from one type to another may be effected during embossing for embossing characters in another case. Aligning for embossing.-Each embossing bar 9 is notched at 11 for engagement by a spring loaded ball (13) in the top left of the groove 7, Fig. 1, when the bar sides 19a, 19b are in use, and by a similar sprung ball in the lower right of the groove when the unseen sides of the bar are being used. Embossing arrangements.-A platen 25 is slidingly moved to effect embossing by the operation of a lever 133, Fig. 7, in direction 145. This operates a cam 113 engaging a roller 237 on the spring returned platen slide 117. Platens.-Interchangeable platens 25 may be fitted with rubber members 31 to suit the different size characters. Variable letter-spacing.-The tape 121, comprising a plastic foil on which the characters appear during the deforming embossing action is fed automatically on a return strike of the lever 131. A cam 143 pivots a lever 137 and slides a pushing rod 151 to the left, Fig. 6, during operation and a pawl 159 slides over teeth 161 on a ratchet wheel associated with a tape feed wheel 165. A sensing member 169 on the end slides over an adjustable roller 171 having various guides 175, 177. These guides determine the amount of time the pawl 159 is in engagement with the ratchet wheel on the return stroke of the cam 143. Transverse cutting of web.-A cutting tool 131, Fig. 6, is operated by a further cam 111 operated by movement of the lever 133 in a direction indicated by the arrow 135. A second perforation may follow if the lever 133 is retracted a little before the second perforation is made. This is effected without further complete new embossing operation, and enables a backing strip to be easily removed.
