Abstract

A support for an annular article comprises a support over which the article is movable to encompass the support, a stop to limit movement of the article in one direction along the housing and one or more retractible locking elements movable to limit movement of the article in the other direction, operating means to control movement of the locking element or elements, the locking element or elements being carried by a member movable within the housing under the control of the operating means and the locking element or elements extending through a slot in the member for camming engagement with one edge of the slot against the action of spring means. As shown, a holder 1, which may be a holder for a bobbin 2 from which cigarette paper web is fed continuously, comprises a hollow cylindrical hub, a flange 3 which constitutes a stop member for the bobbin 2. The holder 1 is slidably mounted on a carrier 6 which supports on a plate portion thereof three equally-spaced spring loaded fingers 5 which project through slots 4 in the holder, the holder and the carrier being biassed away from one another by a spring 10. A locking ring 8 threaded on to a portion 15 of the carrier is adjustable to allow movement of the holder relative to the carrier from a position in which the fingers 5 permit removal of the bobbin 2 from the holder to a position in which the fingers are cammed by the slots 4 to engage the bobbin and clamp it to the holder. The bobbin and holder are rotatably mounted on a shaft by means of a sleeve 13, which also permits movement of the assembly along the shaft, the carrier and sleeve being provided with co-operating lugs and slots. In an alternative arrangement, the locking ring 8 may be replaced by a slidable collar with a releasable catch for engaging the carrier portion 15.
