[Also in Division C1] A sol of carbon and an actinide metal compound, e.g. urania, thoria or plutonia is prepared by blending an aqueous solution of an actinide metal salt into a previously prepared ammoniacal carbon dispersion, obtaining an actinide precipitate containing carbon and peptizing the precipitate, preferably with an acid, to lower the pH to 3-4, into an aquasol composition preferably containing 1-40% by weight of carbon. The carbon dispersion may be a dispersion in water containing ammonia or an ammonium producing reagent, e.g. urea, hexamethylene-tetramine, acetamide, ammonium carbamate, or ammonium cyanate. Actinide carbide microspheres containing preferably 5-20% by weight of carbon are prepared from the aquasol by passing small droplets of the aquasol through a column containing an organic dispersion medium to form gel microspheres which are sintered and recovered. The sintering comprises a low temperature pretreatment step in hydrogen preferably at 300-700‹ C. for 2-5 hours and a high temperature step in a vacuum. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,106,332 and 1,107,385.
