Abstract

1,125,915. Oxide and carbide microspheres. W. R. GRACE & CO. 19 April, 1966 [21 April, 1965], No. 17169/66. Heading C1A. [Also in Division G6] Metal oxide microspheres are made by mixing an aquasol of UO 3 , UO 2 , ThO 2 , PuO 2 , PuO 3 , ZrO 2 , BeO, Y 2 O 3 , or a mixture thereof, with an NH 3 -releasing agent, forming droplets of the mixture in a liquid medium in which water has a low solubility and whose temperature is high enough to release NH 3 from the agent and maintaining the droplets in contact with the liquid until they are solidified to microspheres. The term " aquasol " also includes aquasols that have been flocculated by reason of containing dissolved metal salts. The quantity of dissolved salt in the " aquasol " can be above 0À1 g./1. and less than the quantity required for flocculation. The aquasol can also contain a U<SP>4+</SP>, (UO 2 )<SP>2+</SP>, Th<SP>4+</SP>, Pu<SP>4+</SP>, (PuO 2 )<SP>2+</SP>, (ZrO)<SP>2+</SP>, Be<SP>2+</SP>, or Y<SP>3+</SP> salt or mixture thereof and/or carbon (to form carbides) and surfactants. The NH 3 -releasing agent can be hexamethylenetetramine, acetamide, ammonium carbamate, ammonium cyanate or urea or a mixture thereof. The amount of NH 3 -releasing agent used may be sufficient to adjust the pH of the aquasol to 1À0 to 0À1 pH units below the gelation pH of the sol., e.g. an amount at least suficient to provide 70% of the stoichiometric quantity of NH 3 required to precipitate the salt. The total concentration of metal compounds in the aquasol, expressed as the oxides can be from 1 to 500 g./1. The liquid medium can have a solubility for water of 1-30% wt., e.g. C 4 -C 10 alcohol. The droplets and liquid medium can flow concurrently or countercurrently. The microspheres produced can be washed, dried and sintered to form the final microsphere pro - duct. Microspheres of a size range of 50-400Á are disclosed. The microspheres can be used as a nuclear fuel.
