Abstract

1,158,742. Microspheres of metal oxides and carbides. W. R. GRACE & CO. 26 Oct., 1966 [3 Nov., 1965], No. 47985/66. Addition to 1,125,915. Heading C1A. [Also in Division G6] Metal oxide microspheres are produced from the corresponding aquasols by forming droplets of the sol in a dehydrating medium which contains ammonia, and recovering the formed microspheres. The pH of the medium is preferably 8-13À5. The medium preferably has a solubility for water of 1-30 wt. per cent under process conditions, and suitably comprises a C 4-10 alcohol. The ammonia can be introduced into the medium by dissolving gaseous ammonia therein or by adding aqueous ammonia thereto. The aquasol optionally contains an " ammonia-releasing agent " (see Specification 1,125,915). The sol droplets are preferably maintained in contact with the dehydrating medium until their water content is less than 50 wt, per cent of their solids content, and the resulting microspheres are washed with ammonia and with water, and dried. The microspheres obtained have a diameter of 50- 300 microns and may subsequently be sintered. Metal oxides listed are UO 2 , UO 3 , ThO 2 , PuO 2 , PuO 3 , ZrO 2 , BeO, Y 2 O 3 and mixtures thereof. By mixing colloidal carbon with the aquasol, microspheres are obtained comprising an intimate mixture of metal oxide and carbon, and these are convertible to metal carbide microspheres.
