Abstract

1,107,385. Nuclear fuel. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 20 Aug., 1965 [29 Aug., 1964], No. 36463/64. Heading G6C. In making spherical nuclear fuel particles containing carbon by a process involving conversion of a sol to a gel, finely-divided carbon is present when peptization to form the sol takes place. On mixing the sol with an organic gelling medium, the carbon stays in the aqueous phase. In examples, thorium hydroxide is precipitated by adding ammonia to a solution of thorium nitrate, and the precipitate is washed and treated with a mixture of acidified uranyl nitrate solution and an aqueous carbon suspension at elevated temperature. The sol is concentrated, mixed with a solution of hexamethylene tetramine, and dispersed at 90‹ C. into tetrachloroethane containing a surface-, active agent in order to form spherical gel particles which are washed with dilute ammonia, dried, and heated. Alternatively, or in addition, the carbon suspension is added to the thorium nitrate solution before precipitation of the hydroxide. The spherical gel particles may be heated to 140-1800‹ C. to form metallic carbides and the particles then coated with carbon. Fuels containing plutonium may be prepared similarly.
