A metal or other cap-plate 1 for a bottle 1 is sealed by an adhesive, inert packing 3 which flows when compressed by a force of 2 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> but not when subjected to half this amount, the cap being pressed on with a pressure of 2 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> or more to ensure plastic flow, preferably in a reduced atmospheric pressure. The material may be an atactic polypropylene or polyethylene. The cap may be protected by an aluminium ring, or it may be of the screw type.
