Abstract

1,207,955. Transformers. HONEYWELL Ltd. 6 Oct., 1967 [16 Nov., 1966], No. 51324/66. Heading H1T. [Also in Division G1] Apparatus for recording and/or indicating the value of an electrical input signal includes a transformer unit comprisesing a transformer having inductively coupled windings, the turns of one of which are constituted by part of a flexible electrically conductive element, and means for winding and unwinding turns of said one winding. As shown, a fine wire conductor 13 is wound on a rotatable member 14 to produce two groups 15, 12 of turns the group 12 being wound in proximity to and closely coupled with the primary winding 10 of the transformer. Ends 18, 19 of the conductor 13 are fixed to a rotatable wheel 16 which may be non-circular such that rotation of the wheel in a given direction causes turns of one group to unwind while extra turns wind on to the other group. A tensioning pulley 20 and springs 31, 32 in the terminal leads 25, 26 take up any slack in the conductor. An alternative arrangement for winding and unwinding turns on drum 14 comprises two co-planar mounted pulleys (52, 53) (Fig. 4, not shown) which can move along a line joining their centres. As an alternative to the drum-winding arrangement shown, the primary is wound on the central post (34) (Fig. 3, not shown) of a ferrite core (33), the closely linked part of the secondary winding being located on a former (37) and disposed in an annular space between the central post and an outer annular part (35) of the core with the other part of the secondary well spaced from the primary. The other part of the secondary may be on the other end of the former (37) or on a separate former provided with a gear-wheel in mesh with a gear-wheel on the first former (37) for co-operative rotation and winding and unwinding of turns. In a modification (Fig. 5, not shown), two secondaries connected in series are each associated with a primary winding, the primaries being wound in opposite senses. The apparatus for recording and/or indicating the value of an input signal does this by comparison of the input signal with a standard signal derived from the transformer, which acts as a feed-back element from a two-phase induction motor (Figs. 1 and 6, not shown). A screen of copper, silver or aluminium may be disposed between the primary winding(s) and associated secondary winding(s). The fine wire conductor can be replaced by an insulating tape carrying several parallel strands appropriately connected, or alternatively, the flexible conductor may comprise a flexible tube filled with mercury.
