Abstract

[Also in Division F2] An expansible mandrel for mounting a bobbin sleeve 27 comprises a cylinder 4 rotably mounted on a fixed shaft 1, a braking mechanism mounted within the cylinder 4 for arresting rotation of the cylinder, a chuck mechanism mounted on the cylinder for releasably gripping a bobbin sleeve 27 and a means to actuate the braking and chuck mechanisms in sequence whereby the cylinder is arrested before the chuck is actuated. As shown, drum-driven bobbin sleeve 27 is mounted on cylinder 4 by an expanding chuck mechanism comprising axially sliding tubes 22, 24 and rubber ring 25. The ring 25 normally frictionally engages the sleeve 27 since spring 21 forces end plate 34 to the left. The brake comprises a fluid pressureactuated brake lining 10 which can be urged against ring 5 mounted internally in the cylinder 4. Brake lining 10 is mounted on a bushing 8, 9 which is fixed to one end of spring 7. The other end of this spring is attached to fixed shaft 1 so that when the brake lining 10 is urged against the ring 5 during braking it is rotated slightly against the torque of the spring. When the bobbin is to be stopped (e.g. when it is lifted away from its driving drum) pressure fluid is automatically passed through bore 2 via large port 15 to actuate the brake. A smaller port 17 is exposed to chamber 14' when bushing 8, 9 is rotated during braking and the fluid pressure acts on piston 20 so as to cause the chuck to release the sleeve.
