957,598. Disc brakes; fluid-pressure brakes; slip couplings. FAWICK CORPORATION. Nov. 23, 1962 [Dec. 1, 1961], No. 44395/62. Headings F2E, F2F and F2U. A brake - operating mechanism comprises constant - stroke actuating means for moving brake-operating means in opposite directions to apply and release the brake, the actuating means having a constant stroke in either direction of movement of the operating means. As shown, the operating mechanism is applied to a disc brake comprising an axially movable disc 10 and pads 16, 17 held in a calliper 12. Pad 17 is fixed in place and is provided with a back-up plate 18 held in place by a plate 19. Pad 16 is axially movable towards and away from the disc by means of a plunger 54 and is guided by surfaces on the calliper and a guide plate 21. Both pads which are removable radially outwards are retained in place by a U-shaped bracket 25. The actuating means is spring-applied and fluid-pressure released (or vice versa) and comprises a piston 35 which when moved to the left by the spring 36 on release of fluid-pressure through port 39 rotates a gear member 47 by means of rack teeth 45. The constant stroke of the piston is between the abutment 37 for the piston face and the end wall 41 acting as an abutment for the sleeve 40 carried on the piston-rod. Rotation of the gear member 47 causes it to advance axially towards the disc due to the teeth on the extension 48 thereof engaging with the teeth 49 on a stationary nut 50. Plunger 54 is also rotated and moved axially by means of spaced friction plates 57, 58 splined thereto engaging a frictional driving disc 59 bolted to the gear member 47 so as to apply the pad 16 against the disc. If the pad is applied before the piston 35 has completed its stroke the gear 47 continues to rotate with respect to the plunger 54 which remains stationary due to the threaded connection 64, 65 between the two, the friction clutch 57, 58, 59 slipping. Wear adjustment is effected by a one-way brake 95, 85. On application of the brakes the plunger 54 rotates a plate 85 splined thereto which in turn drives a clutch plate 90 by means of a friction plate 89 held in place by a back-up plate 88. An extension 90a abuts a fixed pin 99 and if adjustment is required causes plate 90 to slip with respect to plates 85, 89, a cam 95 mounted on the extension 90a slipping on the periphery of the plate 85. On release of the brake the plate 85 rotates in the reverse direction with the plunger 54 and plate 90 also rotates until the extension 90a abuts a fixed pin 98. Cam 95 then acts as a positive brake on the plate 85 so that plunger 54 is held a predetermined fixed axial distance from the disc. The gear 47 will then rotate with respect to the plunger to allow the piston 35 to complete its constant return stroke.
