[Also in Division C7] When casting a composite body of a copperbased alloy containing 0 to 35% w/w. Pb, 8% to 12% w/w. Sn and phosphorus as a deoxidant upon a ferrous metal insert, Ni is added to the alloy in at least the amount " N " derived from the formula P = 0À0187N<SP>1,75</SP> + 1 (where P is the wt. percentage of phosphorus in the alloy), to preclude the occurrence of iron phosphide at the ferrous metal/copper alloy interface and thereby ensure a good bond. Preferably, the amount of nickel is also determined according to the carbon content of the ferrous metal. A bearing is made by inserting a mild (0À17 w/w. C) steel sleeve into a tubular mould. The mould is provided with a pouring sleeve, plugged with a bottom stopper and preheated to 900‹ C. to 1050‹ C. An alloy comprising is melted and poured into the mould at 1200‹ C. to 1300‹ C. and the mould cooled at a controlled rate. The resulting casting has a steel sleeve with a copper alloy core and at one end of the sleeve a copper alloy cap of the same outside diameter as the sleeve. An axial thrust bearing is completed by machining a blind bore through the copper core into the cap. Brass liners can be cast on to the rotors of swashplate pumps using the alloys set forth above.
