[Also in Divisions Cl and C6] Apparatus for continuous fermentation of a nutrient substrate by means of micro-organisms includes a jacketed, fixed, horizontal or slightly inclined fermenting tube 4, Fig. 1, provided with mixing means, e.g. stirring wings 1, or slots, sinter plates &c. 25, Fig. 8, for air or inert gas, to cause a thin mixing liquid layer to be formed on the surface of the inside of the tube, a port 6 for the admission of nutrient solution and an overflow 11 for carrying off the fermented nutrient solution with the microorganisms multiplied by growth. The flow speed and volume of the substrate are regulated by adjustment of the inclination of the tube and the height of the overflow, respectively. Several superposed tubes may be used, e.g. in the continuous production of beer or wine. The stirring members may each consist of three wings and these may be staggered at 60‹ intervals along the shaft. Alternatively propeller blades, one single stirring blade (or a plurality of smaller blades) extending over the length of the fermenting tube, a close fitting hollow roller provided with holes or slits in its shell for the injection of compressed air or inert gas, a grooved roller, or a combination of roller 22, Fig. 6, and stirring rod(s) 23 may be used. Mention is made of the microbiological treatment of sewage.
