Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable production of high-viscosity substance by aerobic fermentation, by feeding air or O2-enriched gas and a nutrient source to an apparatus capable of continuously cutting and dividing a fluid flow with stationary disks and rotating disks having plural holes. CONSTITUTION:An apparatus in an empty state without containing anything is initially thermally sterilized with steam. Molasses in a culture medium are then adjusted to about 20wt.% sutured concentration and a culture medium prepared by adding ammonium sulfate as an auxiliary nutrient source thereto is placed in a buffer tank 2-7 and thermally sterilized. After the sterilization, temperature is set at about 30 deg.C which is a fermentation temperature and bacteria capable of producing xanthan gum are inoculated thereinto. Germ-free air is subsequently introduced to about half of the circulating flow rate of a liquid while circulating the liquid by a pump 2-8. Rotating disks 2-4 having plural holes are rotated relatively to stationary disks 2-3 at about 380r.p.m. to carry out mixing by continuous dividing operation. Thereby oxygen and nutriments can be fed to the high-viscosity solution and high-viscosity substances can be produced by aerobic fermentation with hardly any energy consumption.
