Abstract

1,205,572. Aerogel/fibre thermal insulants. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 28 Sept., 1967 [29 Sept., 1966], No. 43668/66. Headings C3C and C3N. Thermal insulating material is made by placing aerogel particles and fibrous material, e.g. fibres of aluminium silicate, or of carbon, in a closed vessel containing a vane which is rotated so as to create a vortex in the mixture thereby achieving dispersal, comminution and bonding of the materials to each other. An opacifier, e.g. a metallic powder, zircon or carbon-black, may be added to the fibres and aerogel in the vessel. The materials, after subjection to the rotating vane, may be pressed in a die to produce a block.
