Abstract
1,205,251. Viscose rayon fibres. COURTAULDS Ltd. 31 Jan., 1968 [1 Feb., 1967], No. 4905/67. Heading B5B. Viscose rayon fibres are rendered less liable to discolour during sterilization by impregnating them in the never-dried state with a solution of sodium borohydride or an α-hydroxy carboxylic acid, e.g. lactic or citric acid and then drying them. The process is preferably applied to never-dried fibres in the course of the spinning process and may be applied simultaneously with a finishing agent e.g. a sorbiton ester-ethylene oxide condensate, immediately before the fibres are dried. If the spinning process includes a bleaching step the treatment is applied later. The fibres may then be sterilized either by heating them in steam at 120‹ C. for 30 minutes or by washing them in distilled water at 20‹ C. with mild agitation for 30 minutes, washing them with fresh water for 2 minutes, centrifuging and then heating at 120‹ C. in steam for 30 minutes.
