Abstract

1,205,200. Artificial respiration. A. P. PEDRICK. 10 Feb., 1970, No. 3732/70. Heading A5T. An apparatus for inducing respiration, in victims of poliomylitis, comprises an airtight flexible jacket having incorporated into its structure a plurality of annular expandable hollow rings of rubber, or like elastomeric material, which rings, when supplied with compressed air will cause the jacket to expand away from the wearer's chest thus leaving a space at sub-atmospheric pressure, the atmospheric pressure in the wearer's lungs being operable to expand the latter to induce respiration, the jacket having incorporated in it airtight seals of sponge-rubber around the neck, waist and wrists of the wearer. Provision is made for providing an oscillating gas-pressure, to the rings, from a motor-driven air-pump located beneath the couch on which the patient lies. The jacket may incorporate a bellows unit either at front or rear, connected to a fixed abutment, to provide an air-reservoir and to enable the couch, in the event of a powerfailure, to be rocked bodily about a pivot so that the bellows will exert the required pumping action. In a modification (Fig. 10, not shown) the couch is rocked continuously by a motor-driven cam, and a fixed bellows provides the oscillating pressure.
