Abstract

750,024. Artificial respiration apparatus. CONITECH, Ltd. Oct. 19, 1953, No. 28759/53. Class 81(2). Artificial respiration apparatus comprises a portable casing, which fits over and encloses frontal portions of the patient's body and which is rigid enough to resist deformation under moderate suction which is applied through a suction duct communicating with the interior of the casing, and fluidtight means fo sealing the casing to the patient's body, resilient members being associated with side portions of the casing and the sealing means to urge the sealing means laterally inwardly to lightly clamp the patient's body. The casing 12 is constructed so that it will cover the thoracic and abdominal regions of the patient including the ilia and is made of plastic material. The upper marginal edge 26 is concavely arched towards the lower end of the casing so that the area in which a tracheotomy may be performed is exposed but the side portions 73 of the upper marginal edge 26 rest against the patient's clavicles. The interior of the casing 12 is lined on its side edges 22, 24 and its upper marginal edge 26 with a resilient sealing strip 18 preferably of rectangular cross section. The lower marginal edge 28 is provided with a resilient sealing strip 20 which is provided with recesses 52 for the reception of the patient's ilia and which at its centre is spaced from but secured to the lower marginal edge 28 by a thin sheet 48. Along each side edge 22, 24 of the casing 12 a portion 30 of the sealing strip 18 is spaced from the casing 12. A thin flexible sheet 32 is secured to each side of the casing 12 and covers the surfaces of the portions 30 of the sealing strip which are nearest and furthest from the body and thus encloses a space P between the spaced portions 30 and the casing 12 within each space P a spring 56 is provided which is secured at one end to the casing 12 by a screw and bears against the outer surface of the spaced portions 30 enabling the apparatus to be fitted to patient's of different widths. A support means 74 is provided at each side of the casing 12 for the reception of axially slidable rods each carrying at its lower end a ball 94 by means of which the apparatus may be supported on a bed or the like to take most of the weight off the apparatus. The rods may be fixed in adjusted position by apertured springs which are secured to the casing at one end and which engage with a selected one of a number of annular grooves in the rods. A suction duct 100 and a pressure gauge 102 are provided on the casing. Studs 106 and securing brackets 108 are provided so that fastening straps may be attached to enable the apparatus to be worn when the patient is not in a reclining position. In an alternative construction (not shown) the casing encloses only the patients' abdomen, the chest being exposed. Both upper and lower parts of the apparatus are constructed in a similar fashion to the lower part of the apparatus described above. Specification 641,496 is referred to.
