Abstract

740,507. Spinal supports. HALE, R. H. Sept. 22, 1953 [April 2, 1953], No. 26149/53. Class 81(2). An orthopraxis appliance comprises body conforming sheets of light-transmitting thermoplastic material, backing pads applied thereto, strap fastener means secured in said sheets and separate washable arm, body and perineal straps having fastener means for engaging the fastener means in the sheets to secure the appliance upon a patients body. The device comprises a front abdominal sheet 10 and a back conforming sheet 12 secured on the body by arm straps 14 and body and perineal straps 16, 18. The front and back sheets 10, 12 are made of light-transmitting acrylic resin e.g. that sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Plexiglas." Foam rubber backing pads 20, 22 are fused on the front and back sheets 10, 12 and extend beyond the edges of these sheets. The arm straps 14 are made of fabric covered in the underarm portion by a flat rubber tube section 26. The body straps 16 are made from synthetic resin, e.g. that sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Nuron," covered on the inside with a layer 30 of felt. The perineal straps 18 may be made from webbing. Snap action type fasteners 32 are provided to secure the straps 14, 16, 18 to the front and back sheets 10, 12, adjustment buckles 40 integral with the female parts of the fasteners 32 being provided on the straps 14, 16, 18 at the front of the appliance. The back conforming sheet 12 has a pelvic band portion 42 and a scapulae portion 44 integrally connected with a part 46 which in wear extends over and beyond the transverse processes of the spine. An outwardly directed medial rib 52 is provided in the part 46 to lie over the spinous processes of the spine. In a further embodiment (not shown) of similar construction the back conforming sheet extends upwardly only as far as the ninth dorsal vertebra of the patient's back. the scapulae portion and the arm straps being omitted.
