Abstract

1,204,941. Door mounting arrangements for vehicles. VAPOR CORP. 25 March, 1968 [20 April, 1967], No. 14225/68. Heading B7J. [Also in Division E2] A railway passenger car comprises a door 24 which when closed is flush with the side wall 22 and sealed in its frame 26; wherein the door 24 is guided and supported at its leading edge 36 by a roller carrier 92 pivoted thereto and engaging a guide 80 suspended from the vehicle ceiling 50; the door 24 is guided at its trailing edge 38 by rollers 106, 108 mounted thereon and engaging upper and lower channels 96, 98 on the vehicle ceiling 50 and floor 100; and the door 24 is supported at its trailing edge 38 by links 64, 66 on a shaft 68 carried by a sliding frame 44 guided in the plane of the frame 26 and moved by an electric motor 120 acting thereon via an overcentre linkage, to open and close the door. A roller 112 is on the side wall 22 at the top and/or bottom of the frame, and a cam plate on the leading corner(s) of the door 24, or vice versa, to engage the closed door 24 with the flexible seal 110. A manual energenoy unit 142 can be used for moving the linkage back through its overcentre. In the embodiment shown, the frame 44 is suspended at 54 from a track 48 on the ceiling 50 and also guided by a roller 109 engaging in the lower channel 98. The motor 120 drives a gear-box 122 having an output shaft 124 on which is mounted a crank arm 126 pivoted to a rod 128 (so forming the overcentre) connected to a lever 130, 136 having a roller 138 rolling in a channel 140 on the frame 44. In a further embodiment, the wall 22 is curved in transverse cross-section, and the motor is mounted on the inside of the wall 22 between top and bottom of the door frame. The crank arm 126 has a roller at its free end, which roller engages directly in the channel 140. In another embodiment, the sliding frame is of reduced height so as to move below a window in the side wall, and is supported in the track 48 which is now on the floor and guided by rollers engaging the channel 98 now just under the window. The motor is mounted on the floor and the crank arm has its free end pivoted to one end of a rod pivoted at its other end to a lever, carrying at one end the roller 138 and pivoted at the other to the floor, at a point between its ends. In yet a further embodiment, the motor is mounted beneath the floor, and the crank arm is connected by way of a rod, a double-armed lever, a rod a doublearmed lever, and a rod to a bell-crank carrying the roller engaging the frame channel. The manual emergency unit can be operated from outside the car as well as inside. A motordriven folding step assembly is retractable into, and extendable out of, the car.
