Abstract

Coke ovens and retorts are fitted with superheating devices heated by the waste flue gases and adapted to deliver superheated steam or gas to the centre of the charge. As applied to a setting of vertical retorts, the superheater b is arranged at the base of the chimney a, and the steam &c. pipes c pass through the flues d at the top of the setting, and through ducts e located in a vertical flue formed in the division wall f. Ducts g deliver the superheated steam to the retorts h. As applied to continuously-operated horizontal or inclined retorts, as described in Specification 113,981, the superheater is arranged as shown and the steam inlet-pipe j is arranged beneath the hot coke at the delivery end of the retort h, the gas outlet i being arranged near the coal inlet.
