Abstract

1,204,567. 204, 567. Thermographic transfer materials and processes. COLUMBIA RIBBON & CARBON MFG. CO. Inc. Nov.28, 1968 [Dec.20, 1967], No.56502/68. Heading G2C. A thermographic transfer material comprises an infrared transmissive thermoplastic support melting above 450‹ F. coated with an infrared transmissive semi-opaque layer containing a minor amount by weight of a thermoplastic binder and a major amount by weight of a crystalline aromatic acid having a melting point which is higher than the softening point of the binder but below 400‹ F., the compound not being a solvent for or soluble in the binder even on melting but being soluble in a common solvent with the binder which is used in coating. Specified acids are salicylic, benzoic and o-tulinic acid. Specified binders are copolymers of butadiene with styrene or acrylonitrile, polyalkylacrylates, polyvinylethers, polybutene resins, polyethylene, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl butal and cellulose ethers and esters. Polyethyleneterephthalate is the specified support. The material is connected with an infrared transmissive recepter sheet and an original and reflex exposed to imagewise transfer the layer to the recepter sheet. The layer and the receptor sheet may both contain colour formers or the aromatic acid may be the colour former if the receptor sheet contains an acid-sensitive dye base. The receptor sheet may soften at the transfer temperature or be coated with a layer which softens so that better transfer occurs.
