Abstract

In a gate valve, which is adapted to be buried underground and to operate once only so as to facilitate the introduction of natural gas to a gas main, closure of the valve duct 12 is effected by a valve disc 14 co-operating with a seat 16, a pair of inclined surfaces 32 formed on the disc engaging a pair of abutment members 34 to enhance the closure. Upon rotation of a shaft 26, the disc is caused to move away from its seat and into a well 10, such rotary motion of the shaft being converted to linear motion of the disc by means of a non-rotatable nut 28 held captive between a pair of forked members 30 projecting from the disc. When in the well 10 and subsequent to the withdrawal of a plug 38, the disc can be disconnected from the shaft and the latter withdrawn from the valve casing which is then sealed. Dust and the like, collecting in the well and under the disc which, when in the well, rests on flanges (46, Fig. 2, not shown) formed therein, may be removed through a removable plug 48. The disc and seat are so formed as to permit their introduction into the valve through the duct 12, the arrangement serving to minimize the valve size.
