Seed potatoes 60 are passed through a disinfectant solution in a tank 2 by an endless conveyer belt 18. The latter is of wire mesh supported at intervals by cross-members 22 which are connected at their respective ends to endless chains 12, 12. Rollers 14 of the chains bear on bars 16. The potatoes are lifted out of the solution by an upwardly inclined section of the conveyer in the downstream end 2b of the tank 2. Laths 66 secured to the upper surface of the belt 18 scrape sediment from the bottom of the tank to a sump 64. Longitudinal partitions 48 prevent the potatoes 60 fouling the chains 12, 12. The partitions 48 may have a rubber skirting (not shown) engaging the chains. Ports 56 in the partitions 48 permit the solution to be drawn off at the downstream end by a pump 62 and returned to inlet ports 58 at the upstream end.
