Abstract

1,203,654. Stacking and bundling bags. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 29 Aug., 1967 [29 Aug., 1966], No. 39513/67. Headings B8C and B8R. Collapsed bags, particularly square-ended plastics bags, are stacked and formed into a bundle with a W-shaped cross-section, either manually or automatically. Manual method.-Straps 32, 34 are laid across the bottom of a box 40, Fig. 2, beneath a movable V-shaped former 42. Bags are then placed over the former so that the ends of each bag abut the sidewalls 52, 54 of the box. Next, the former 42 is slid from the end 48 of the box, and the pile of bags 13 pressed down by a flat platen which causes the bags to slide over each other until the W-shaped configuration shown in Fig. 1 is reached. Straps 32, 34 are finally secured around the bundle. Automatic method.-Individual bags 50, Fig. 4, are added to a stack 51 from below by suction grippers 74. The stack is supported by fork tines 62 which are withdrawn laterally each time a bag is added. The stack is shaped by a slotted former 64, and when complete is supported by trap-doors 70 before being pushed through a shaping tunnel which has an entrance port approximately in the shape of the stack 51 in its initial state. The cross-section of the tunnel changes gradually to the shape shown in Fig. 8 so that the stack emerges as a W-shaped bundle ready for strapping.
