Abstract

1,203,130. Joining refractory bricks. INTERPACE CORP. 8 Nov., 1968 [22 Jan., 1968; 13 Sept., 1968], No. 53154/68. Heading ClJ. [Also in Division F4] An organic plastics composition containing 30-90 wt. per cent of finely divided heatresistant inorganic filler is used as a bond between refractory elements in furnaces, kilns ladles, crucibles, stopper rods for ladles, and hearths. The filler can be a mixture of materials of different softening points, e.g. (a) quartz, pyrophyllite and sodium silicate, (b) chrome ore, alumina and sodium silicate, (c) zircon and alumina, and (d) chrome ore, magnesia and ground glass. Other suitable fillers are mullite, kyanite, diaspore, zirconium oxide, aluminates, periclase, magnesite, amphibole, serpentine, olivine, powdered copper or iron, ferric oxide, kaolinitic clays, micaceous clays, montmorillonite clays, borates and feldspars. Suitable plastics, mainly vinyl polymers and synthetic elastomers and conventional plasticizers therefore are listed. The plastics compositions can be reinforced with metal strips or sheets or wire mesh. The plastics compositions can be used as preformed resilient gaskets which can be stuck between the refractory elements by an epoxy or polysulphide resin or as viscous coatings on the surfaces of the elements. The compositions are elastomeric and upon heating accommodate the dimensional changes which occur in the constructions and set and carbonize to leave a bond formed from the filler and carbon from the plastic.
