Abstract
Basic, fireclay and highly aluminous refractory bricks are made by mixing a granular basic, fireclay or highly aluminous refractory with 1-3% by weight aluminium powder and 2-8% by weight oxidizing agent, based on the total composition, shaping the mix, and firing at 800-900 DEG C. Suitable oxidizing agents are potassium chromate, dichromate or nitrate, sodium nitrate, or chromic oxide. The moulded shapes are dried below 300 DEG C. before firing. In examples, the refractory is magnesite-chrome, 100% dead-burnt magnesite, firebrick (grog + bonding clay), sillimanite, or alumina brick (calcined bauxite + fireclay grog + bonding clay).
