Abstract

1,203,114. Folding cylinder. WOOD INDUSTRIES Inc. 12 Jan., 1968 [20 March, 1967], No. 1805/68. Heading B8R. A folding cylinder 2 comprises a plurality of circumferentially extending slots on the outer surface thereof, an adjustable flexible band 11 in each of the slots, each end of each of the bands being pivotally secured to the cylinder by a hinge 16, 18 and at least one end of each of the bands being movable circumferentially relative to the cylinder towards and away from the other end; and adjustment means for moving the said one end substantially circumferentially relative to the other end to cause the band to expand and retract with respect to the outer surface of the cylinder. A folder comprises a folding cylinder 2 and a cutting cylinder 3 for receiving sections 4 of newspaper from a former (not shown). Cylinder 3 has conventional knives 5, and cylinder 2 carries pins 6 for holding the sections on to its periphery and retractable tucking blades to tuck the cut sections between folding rollers 7. Each band 11 is held between hinges 16 and 18. Block 17 of hinge 18 is slidable towards hinge 16 under the control of screw 22. Block 15 of hinge 16 is slidable towards hinge 18 under the control of screw 29. With a plurality of bands 11 spaced axially of the cylinder, screws 29 permit individual adjustment of each band whilst a common axially extending control rod (40, Fig. 2, not shown) serves to simultaneously rotate screws 22 of each hinge 18, providing simultaneous adjustment of the bands.
