Abstract

1,203,063. Butadiene/styrene-type copolymers. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. 3 Oct., 1967 [3 Oct., 1966], No. 45059/67. Heading C3P. Copolymers of butadiene and styrene, alphamethyl styrene or styrene nuclearly substituted by a C 1 to C 4 alkyl group are made by copolymerizing a monomeric mix containing 10 to 98 parts by weight of butadiene per 100 parts of monomer, in the presence of a lithium-based catalyst e.g. butyllithium, at a temperature in excess of 310‹ F. whilst having present sub stantial amounts of the monomers whereby there is produced a copolymer having less block polymer of the styrene-type than would be produced by copolymerizing at 115‹ F. and otherwise identical conditions. An ether-type compound may be incorporated into the polymerization system. The copolymerization may be carried out in bulk, or in a hydrocarbon solvent and by batchwise or continuous techniques e.g. using two reactors. The product may be a liquid. Microstructures of the butadiene unit of the copolymer are given. The copolymers may be blended with natural or synthetic rubbers or with polystyrene or polypropylene to form high impact materials, and sulphurvulcanized in presence of carbon and plasticizers.
