Abstract

1,170,802. Foamed ethylene copolymers. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 1 March, 1967 [2 March, 1966], No. 9668/67. Headings C3C and C3P. A process for making foamed ethylene copolymers comprises mixing a molten thermoplastic ethylene copolymer with isobutane or a C 5 _ 7 hydrocarbon having at least 2 lateral methyl groups and a b.pt. of - 10‹ to 60‹ C. in an amount of 5-35 parts per cent by weight with reference to weight of polymer at a pressure above the vapour pressure of the latter at the mixing temperature and flashing to reduced pressure. The preferred hydrocarbons are 2,2- dimethylpropane, 2,2-dimethylbutane and 2,3- dimethylbutane, the first two being employed in the examples wherein ethylene copolymers with n- and t.-butyl acrylate, vinyl acetate and 2-hexylacrylate are foamed. Foams with fine cell structure may be produced by incorporating nucleating agents such as talc or substances which release gases on heating, such as azo compounds or sodium bicarbonate/citric acid mixture. Mixtures of ethylene copolymers with other polymers may be foamed, e.g. ethylenevinyl acetate copolymer with polyisobutylene. Bitumen may also be incorporated in the material to be foamed.
