Abstract

1472074 Expandable and cellular polymer/ nucleating agent blends COSDEN TECHNOLOGY Inc 30 Aug 1974 [31 Aug 1973] 38072/74 Heading C3C A composition suitable for the preparation of a foamed polymer comprises a styrene, or alkyl- or halo-substituted styrene polymer, and 0À02- 0À15% by wt., based on the polymer, of an isobutylene polymer which is liquid at ambient temperature and which may have a mol. wt. 500-5000 as a nucleating agent. The composition may contain a blowing agent. The nucleating agent may be incorporated into the polymer during or subsequent to the polymerization of the polymer. In the examples styrene was polymerized in aqueous suspension in the presence of three isobutylene polymers of mol. wt. from 1350 to 2700 and the polystyrene was then impregnated with pentane and pre-expanded to produce a cellular polymer having an average cell size of 50-60 Á.
